Djibouti is one of the smallest countries in Africa with a population of 1 million people. Based on ABiQ’s population forecast, Djibouti’s population will grow to 1.2 million by 2030.

Djibouti had a GDP of $2 billion in 2019 or just shy of $3,000 per capita. Djibouti has a state-of-the-art port which helps with trade. The country also acts as a bridge between Africa and the Middle East. Tourism is another sector contributing to the economy.

Power and water

Demand for electricity will increase considerably as the government is investing in developing its infrastructure for ports and railways. We predict Djibouti will require an additional 9 megawatt of electricity generating capacity by 2030. The country is aiming to produce 100% of its electricity needs from renewable energy.

Djibouti has experienced a drought over the last decade. The country is working on improving access to potable water. For the next 10 years, a growing population will require 15 million cubic meters of additional potable water per annum just to meet its basic needs.  Food security remains a threat that requires investment.

Retail

Djibouti is investing and developing its free trade zone and that will attract growth in the retail sector. As the economy recovers, we believe there will be an additional requirement for 25,000 square meters of retail space.

Healthcare

ABiQ predicts Djibouti will need 2 additional hospitals by 2030 to meet the demands of the growing population. This will also help the population in rural areas which is currently struggling as most of the infrastructure is in the capital.
