Malawi has a population of over 19 million. ABiQ predicts this will grow at 22% and reach 23.4 million by 2030.
Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. Its economy is heavily driven by agriculture and the sector employs most of the workforce. In 2019, the country had a GDP of $7 billion or around $440 per capita.
Power and Water
Only 12% of the population has access to electricity. The country is looking at producing clean energy to help its people, climate and economy. The first solar project is already in development which will help the energy production capacity. Malawi will require an additional 160 megawatts of electricity capacity by 2030.
Malawi has made access to clean water and sanitation a priority. The country still needs an additional 310 million cubic meters of potable water per annum by 2030. It is only to meet the needs of its growing population and does not include the agriculture sector.
Retail
There will be a demand for additional retail space as both the population and economy grow. ABiQ predicts an additional requirement of 470,000 square metres of retail space in 10 years’ time.
Healthcare
There is a need for additional hospitals in Malawi as the current healthcare system will not be able to sustain as the population grows. Using its forecasting tool, ABiQ expects Malawi will need 30 more hospitals by 2030.
