Southern Africa requires 170,000 teachers by 2030

5 May 2020

Southern Africa has the smallest population of the five African regions and over the next 10 years, its growth rate will also be the lowest. Even though Southern Africa is almost a quarter of Africa’s population, Southern Africa’s GDP just over $400 billion. Out of this, more than $380 billion is from the South African economy.

Electricity

Eskom is Africa’s largest electricity producer and supplies power to most of the region and beyond. As a result of poor management and lack of investment, the company is facing significant challenges maintaining stable supply, but an aggressive maintenance plan is underway which will last for the best part of the next decade. ABiQ estimates that an additional 3 GW of power generating capacity will be required to supply power to the additional 9 million people we predict the region will have by 2030.

Education

By 2030, we’ve forecasted that there will be nearly 13 million children in school. This will mean an additional 170,000 trained teachers, just to maintain current standards. Approximately 3,500 schools will be built to house these children and teachers.

Healthcare

With the current COVID-19 healthcare crisis overwhelming the healthcare system, a significant shortage in critical care facilities are exposed.  Under normal circumstances, an additional 64 hospital would be to be built over the next 10 years.  To staff these hospitals, a further 1,800 physicians will have to be trained and educated.

Water

Over the past few years, droughts across Southern African have caused water shortages. The region solely relies on rainfall as a potable water source, but both Namibia and South Africa are exploring alternative water sources, like desalination.

Retail

Retail has been well established in large parts of Southern Africa.  ABiQ does expect some investment in retail in some of the main centres in the region with roughly 1 million square metres to be developed.

Residential

Housing is in short supply and government programmes to develop affordable housing schemes are present in most of the Southern African countries.
