Liberia’s population to cross 6 million by 2030

6 May 2020

Liberia has one of the highest population growth rates in the world. Using our forecasting tool, ABiQ predicts the population will grow at 20% in 10 years and cross 6 million.

Liberia is one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world. The GDP was $3.2 billion in 2019 or around $700 per capita. The economy depends on agriculture and mining mainly.

Power and Water

The power sector in Liberia was affected the most during the civil war that ended in 2003. The government is taking measures to rebuild the sector to meet the needs of its growing population and the agricultural sector. Liberia will need an additional electricity capacity of 40 megawatts in the next 10 years to achieve its energy needs.

Liberia has taken measures to improve the water crisis in the country, but a lot needs to be done. As part of the sustainable development goals, Liberia has to provide safe and clean water to all its population by 2030. Clean water will also help the economy. Liberia will need an additional 73 million cubic meter of potable water per annum by 2030.

Retail

The retail sector will see more growth in the coming years as consumer spending grows. A growing population will also increase the demand for additional retail space. By the next decade, Liberia will need an additional 110,000 square meters of retail space.

Healthcare

The healthcare sector in Liberia needs a quick overhaul. We expect the country will need an additional 7 hospitals by 2030 to improve the healthcare standards.
