Burundi needs 19 hospitals by 2030

17 May 2020

Burundi has a population of almost 12 million. According to ABiQ’s business intelligence platform, Burundi’s population will grow at almost 23% and reach 14.6 million within 10 years.

Burundi is a landlocked country that mainly depends on agriculture. The main agriculture export is coffee.  Further, the country depends on external aid. The GDP was $3.2 billion in 2019 or equal to slightly over $300 per capita. The government is taking initiatives on modernizing agriculture production which should help with economic growth.

Power and Water

Burundi has one of the lowest electricity access rates globally. At the moment, the country is producing its own electricity as well as importing from its neighbors. The country is looking for long term investments in infrastructure to increase electricity generating capacity.  An investment in this sector will enable other sectors to develop and grow. ABiQ predicts there will be an additional demand for 110 megawatts of electricity capacity in the coming decade to maintain the current rate of access to power.

Burundi has ample natural water resources.  However, resource management can be optimized. The resources are drying up and a growing population will result in increased challenges. We expect demand for an additional 200 million cubic meters of potable water per annum by 2030.

Retail

The retail sector in Burundi currently consists mainly of small shops. A growing population will increase demand for access to markets. We anticipate demand for an additional 300,000 square meters of retail space by the end of the next decade.

Healthcare

The healthcare infrastructure in Burundi needs a major overhaul. Most of the population does not have access to basic health coverage. Therefore, the government will need investment in order to improve the existing healthcare standards. We expect the country will need an additional 19 hospitals to support its growing population and their healthcare needs.
