Botswana is world’s second-largest diamond producing country

27 May 2020

Botswana is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. It’s a small country with a population of 2.4 million. According to ABiQ’s business intelligence tool, the population will grow by 15% and reach 2.7 million by 2030.

Botswana is the second-largest diamond producing country in the world. Its economy is heavily dependent on diamond exports and is affected by global price changes. Tourism is another contributor that has recently taken a hit due to the global COVID19 pandemic. The country had a GDP of $19 billion or $7,850 per capita in 2019.

Power and Water

At a national level, the electricity access rate is up to 60% and the country aims to improve it to 100% by 2030. Botswana used to rely on South Africa for power generation but now produces most of its electricity. It requires more investment to expand its grid networks as the mining sector and a growing population demands more power. We predict the country will need an additional 15 megawatts of electricity generating capacity within the next 10 years.

Botswana has experienced droughts in the past and a peak in demand for water might result in a crisis. Botswana has received funds for developing infrastructure, but the projects have not been completed yet. We expect the country will require 26 million cubic meters of additional potable water per annum by 2030.

Retail:

The government has been trying to diversify its economy by developing the retail and tourism sector. International retail chains and retailers from South Africa have also shown interest in Botswana in recent years. There will be a boost in demand as tourism opens up again and we expect the country will require an additional 40,000 square meters of retail space over the next 10 years.

Healthcare:

Botswana aims to achieve universal healthcare access for all by 2030. The country has made healthcare a priority and is working to improve the existing system. A growing population will require more hospitals and health workers. We expect the country will require 3 hospitals in the coming 10 years to maintain the current healthcare standards.
