South Sudan is a landlocked country in East Africa. It gained independence from Sudan in 2011, bringing an end to Africa’s longest-running civil war. The country has a population of 11.7 million and will grow at 20% to reach 14.5 million by 2030.

In 2019, the estimated GDP was $1 billion or $275 per capita. The economy depends on oil exports and agriculture. The country lacks the infrastructure needed to help run the industrial sector. It is building everything from scratch after the civil war ended.

Power and Water:

Only 1% of the population has access to grid electricity in South Sudan. The government is working with development banks and foreign companies for funding. We estimate the expanding population will need an additional 120 megawatts of electricity generating capacity over a period of 10 years. This is in addition to provide access to the current population.

Lack of infrastructure and funding has resulted in only 55% of South Sudan with access to potable water. The government aims to achieve universal access to safe water by 2030 and requires investment and better planning to achieve the goal. We expect the country will need an additional 450 million cubic metres of potable water by 2030 to help the demand. 

Retail:

The retail market consists of small shops owned by locals. Lack of infrastructure and security are the major reasons for the sector not being developed yet. The country will need 300,000 square metres of retail space as the population grows, according to ABiQ.

Healthcare:

Healthcare was the worst affected sector, even after the civil war ended. Most of the facilities were either burned down or damaged. Less than 30% of the population has access to proper healthcare. More investment is required to help renovate existing hospitals and build new ones. We predict the country will need 20 hospitals to help support the current system.
