Guinea-Bissau to grow by 18% by 2030

16 Jun 2020

Guinea-Bissau is a West African country. According to ABiQ, the population will reach 2.3 million from 2 million by 2030. That’s a growth rate of 18% over the next 10 years.

Guinea-Bissau had a GDP of $1.8 billion or $780 per capita in 2019. Subsistence farming is the main driver of the economy along with cashew nut exports, and foreign assistance. The economy has taken a hit due to political instability. Poor infrastructure and difficult business regulations are making it difficult for the country to diversify the economy.

Power and Water

Over 45% of Guinea-Bissau has access to electricity and it is expected to improve in the years to come. The government aims to improve the access rate to 80% by 2030. We expect the country will need 15 megawatts of additional electricity capacity to maintain the current rate over a period of 10 years.

Over 50% of the population has access to potable water. Government and International donors are committed to improving the access rate, but the funding was reduced recently. We expect the country will need an additional 23 million cubic metres of potable water capacity per annum over a decade to help sustain the current access rate.

Retail

The retail market in Guinee Bissau is not developed yet. No international retailers have entered the market due to difficult business regulations. The market is set to grow only when the per capita spends increases. We predict the country will need an additional 40,000 square metres of retail space in the coming 10 years to meet the requirements of a growing population.

Healthcare

Healthcare access in the country has not been great. Investment by the government has been slow which has resulted in a below-average healthcare system. We expect the country will need 2 additional hospitals by 2030 to help maintain the existing system.
