Tunisia’s retail sector to grow further by 2030

17 Jun 2020

Tunisia is a North African country with a population of 11.8 million. According to ABiQ, the country will grow 8% over the next 10 years and reach 12.8 million.

Tunisia had a GDP of $40 billion or around $3,800 per capita in 2019. The economy depends mainly on agriculture, export and tourism. The government is modernizing its agriculture sector to improve its output and also working on improving the business climate.

Power and Water

Most of the population has access to electricity through the national grid. Tunisia aims to produce 30% of its electricity by renewable energy by 2030. We expect the country will need 40 megawatts of electricity generating capacity over a period of 10 years to maintain the current rate.

Tunisia has an excellent water access rate in both its urban and rural areas. The demand for water continues to rise as the sectors and population grow putting pressure on the network but the government has balanced it well. We expect the country will need an additional 72 million cubic metres of potable water per annum by 2030 to maintain the demand.

Retail:

The retail sector has developed well and is expected to grow stronger in the coming years. The increasing purchasing power and a growing population will give a further boost to the sector. We expect Tunisia will need additional 120,000 square metres of retail space over the next decade.

Healthcare:

Tunisia has a strong healthcare system in urban areas, but rural areas still need improvement. The government is investing in healthcare to improve the sector and aims to become a medical centre for Africa. We estimate the country will require 7 more hospitals to support the healthcare sector by 2030.
