Niger will require 75 hospitals by 2030

1 Jul 2020

Niger is a landlocked country in West Africa named after the river Niger. It has a population of slightly over 24 million. ABiQ expects it to grow by 44% and reach almost 35 million by 2030.

Niger has some of the world’s largest uranium reserves which accounts for the bulk of its exports. Subsistence farming also contributes to the economy. Niger had a GDP of $10 billion or slightly over $400 per capita making it one of the poorest countries on the continent.

Power and Water:

Only 16% of the total population has access to electricity. The government is taking initiatives to improve the access rate but will require significant commitment and investment to achieve its objectives. We expect Niger will require an additional electricity capacity of 402 megawatts by 2030 to increase the access to the power rate to 28%.

Around half the population still lacks access to potable water. The government is working with international partners and looking for further investment to develop the processing and distribution infrastructure for this sector. By using ABiQ’s forecasting tool, we are able to predict the country will need 780 million cubic metres of additional potable Water per annum over the next decade to maintain its current standard.

Retail:

The retail sector in Niger has not developed yet due to low consumer spending and a difficult operational environment. We do expect the retail market to grow as the economy stabilizes. ABiQ forecasts the country will require an additional 1.1 million square metres of retail space to meet the demand by 2030.

Healthcare:

The overall state of healthcare in Niger is poor. There are not many healthcare facilities, especially in rural areas. We expect the country will require 75 hospitals and more than 2,000 physicians over a period of 10 years as the population grows.
