Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. It has a population of 14.9 million. ABiQ predicts it will reach 17.6 million by 2030. That’s a growth rate of 18% over a period of 10 years.
Zimbabwe’s economy is heavily driven by its mining and agriculture sectors. The government has been taking initiatives to boost trade and attract foreign investment. It had a GDP of $31 billion or around $860 per capita in 2019.
Power and Water
The country has substantial renewable energy resources, yet more than half the population lacks access to electricity. The government is working on increasing its energy access by improving electrification in rural areas. We expect the country will require 95 megawatts of electricity capacity by 2030 to maintain its current coverage.
Access to potable water has been declining in recent years resulting in more challenges for the government. The recent drought has forced the authorities to look at alternative sources of safe drinking water. The government aims to ensure that there are sufficient water points across the country. We predict a need for an additional 200 million cubic metres of potable water per annum by 2030 to meet the demands of a growing population.
Retail
The retail sector has grown with the increase in consumer spending. International retailers have also expanded due to favourable trading conditions. We expect demand for an additional retail space of 350,000 square metres over the next 10 years.
Healthcare:
Healthcare in Zimbabwe is turning into a crisis. Hospitals are barely functioning and the government needs to take immediate action to resolve the situation as it aims to achieve universal healthcare in the coming years. We expect the country will need to build an additional 19 hospitals to meet the demands of a growing population.
