Power demand in West Africa

1 Sep 2020

West Africa comprises of 17 countries with a population of almost 402 million. With ABiQ’s forecasting tool, we can predict the population will grow by 25.4% and cross 514 million over the next 10 years.

Ignoring any industrialization requirements and only covering population demand, an increase in population will require an additional 4.5 Gigawatt of electricity capacity by 2030.

Investment required by West Africa

The energy mix is diverse but assuming a capital investment of $1.2 per watt, West Africa will require $5.4 billion to provide 100% access to power for the additional population over the next 10 years. This does not take the existing lack of access to power into consideration.
