Top five ongoing mega projects in Africa
Africa is witnessing a growth in large-scale projects that will affect its economic growth in the future. Needless to say that the sustainable energy industry is thriving, and most of the top ongoing mega projects are those that deal with the production of cleaner energy.
However, there are other residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects in the pipeline too. Here are the top five mega projects ongoing in Africa that you should keep an eye on.
The New Administrative Capital of Egypt-
This is hands down the biggest project that has been ongoing in the Cairo Governorate since 2015. The estimated cost of the New Administrative Capital (NAC) stands at a whopping $5,800 million. About 74% of the infrastructure for the NAC is now complete. Furthermore, phase one of the project costs about $2 billion and will be finished and delivered by 2023. Phase one comprises eight residential neighbourhoods spread across 168 square kilometres. Some of the prominent parts of the NAC are the Governmental District, Money and Business District, New Presidential Palace, North Mohammed bin Zabid settlement, Residential districts, Opera House, Expo City, Green River, Smart Village, Railway Station and Knowledge City.
Algerian Renewable Energy Development and Energy Efficient Program-
Africa is known for its sustainable energy production industry growth. Hence, it is no surprise that one of the top five mega projects in Africa will be constructed to generate energy from solar power. Algerian Energy Minister Mustapha Gitouni announced in February 2019 that they would like to relaunch the PENREE project (Algerian Renewable Energy Development and Energy Efficiency Programme). The objective of the PENREE project is to enable Algeria to produce 27 per cent renewable energy and save 38 billion cubic meters of natural gas by 2030. The project’s budget is approximately $ 3,400 million, and the project has undertaken the production of a massive 22 GigaWatt of renewable solar energy. The project is started in the Northern Highlands of Algeria and began with the tenders to construct 150 MW solar power plants in 2019.
Noor City –
Noor city project calls for the construction of a combination of residential and integrated commercial, administrative, and government service areas in Cairo. The Noor City project is developed by Egypt’s Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities Dr. Assem El Gazzar in conjunction with Mr. Hisham Talaat Moustafa, Director of Talaat Mustafa Group (TMG). Developed on a 20 square kilometre plot of land, the $3,200 million project will be part of the National Administrative Capital.
Tanzania LNG-
The Tanzania Block 2 LNG processing plant is expected to produce 7.5 million tons of liquid natural gas (LNG) per year, making it one of Africa’s largest gas processing plants. The location of the plant will be near Lindi, close to the southern border with Mozambique. However, the negotiations concerning the LNG plant are still in process. The Tanzania Ministry of Energy aims to conclude negotiations by October 2021, which will enable construction to start after the country’s general elections. The plant has a design life of more than thirty years. Moreover, part of the feedstock for the plant is allocated to the domestic market, mainly for power generation purposes. This has the potential to generate 8 Terra Watt Hours of electricity every year.
El Dabaa-
El Daaba Nuclear Power Plant will be Egypt’s first nuclear power plant. The plant will consist of four VVER-1,200 pressurised water reactors. The large-scale plant of approximately 4,800 Mega Watt will be constructed in Dabaa district in the Matrouh Governorate. Construction has been delayed due to the pandemic and should begin in July 2022. The estimated date of completion for this project is February 2030.
These are some of the most promising projects on the cards in Africa and have the potential to generate substantial returns. Large amounts and labour are being spent that will contribute to the economic and developmental growth of African countries.
