8 Aug 2022

The World Bank has approved a new tranche of financial assistance, for the Africa Centres for Disease Control. This World Bank grant totals $100 million financial assistance, and is ring fenced to help the Africa Centers for Disease Control (CDC Africa) strengthen the preparedness capacities of African countries.

World Bank financial support

The World Bank’s additional financial support will help the African Centers for Disease Control (Africa CDC) strengthen the preparedness capacity of African countries by improving the institution’s technical capacity and institutional framework, according to a July 2022 World Bank press release.

“Africa is changing the dynamic in its journey to realizing a New Public Health Order. This project comes at a critical time as we focus on enhancing our support to AU Member States on the health security agenda and standing up our autonomous institution of the AU, ” stated Dr. Ahmed Ogwell Ouma, Acting Director of the Africa Centres for Disease Control.

Health emergency response

According to the release, this grant aims to enable CDC Africa to prepare for, detect, and respond to, disease outbreaks and health emergencies effectively and efficiently across the continent.

“Our investment in the Africa CDC underscores the World Bank’s long-term commitment to supporting African-led regional institutions and Africa’s public health preparedness agenda. Diseases do not respect borders and must be tackled collectively, requiring trusted leadership at the regional level and strong health systems across the continent,” said Boutheina Guermazi, World Bank Director for Regional Integration for Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Northern Africa.
