New Lesotho hospital developed and funded by the Chinese Government
Lesotho will receive a new state-of-the-art hospital and eye centre developed and funded by the China Ministry of Development and Planning at an estimated cost of $68 million.
Lesotho is a small landlocked country within the boundaries of South Africa. The 2.2 million population is forecast to increase by 9 per cent to 2.4 million by 2031. There are 18 hospitals in the country and several healthcare centres predominantly in the country’s western parts, close to the capital Maseru.
In 2011, the Queen Elizabeth II hospital in Maseru was shut down and replaced by the state-of-the-art Queen Mamohato Memorial Hospital. Funding for the Queen Mamohato Memorial Hospital came from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, and developed on a PPP basis. The facility is operated by private healthcare provider Netcare.
The latest hospital to be built in the capital is the Maseru Hospital and Eye clinic. It will be a state-of-the-art facility developed and funded by the China Ministry of Development and Planning. Construction work on the double story 200-bed facility started early this year after some delays. Construction work, originally scheduled to begin in 2018, was finally kicked off by the Shanghai Construction Group. According to the latest schedule, construction work will complete in 2023.
