Togo’s healthcare sector needs investment right now!

31 May 2020

Togo is a small country in West Africa and has a population of slightly over 8 million. ABiQ predicts that it will grow by 20% and reach 10 million within 10 years.

The economy relies heavily on both commercial and subsistence agriculture. Exporting cotton and phosphate has also helped generate revenue for the country. The country had a GDP of $6 billion or $670 per capita in 2019.

Water and Power

Over 60% of Togo’s population does not have access to electricity. The country aims to achieve an access rate of 80% by 2030. To achieve this level of access it will require a serious commitment from the government. At the moment, Togo is generating some of its power and importing the majority from Nigeria and Ghana. We expect the country will need an additional 70 megawatts of electricity generating capacity by 2030.

Togo aims to achieve universal access to safe water for all by 2030. It has shown a serious commitment to achieve this goal. Togo invested heavily in developing infrastructure to improve its water distribution network. We believe the country will require 120 million cubic meters of additional potable water per annum to help the country achieve its goal in the coming decade.

Retail

The retail sector is relatively developed in Togo. We expect it to develop even further as the population grows in the coming years. We believe the country will require an additional 200,000 square meters of retail space within 10 years.

Healthcare

The healthcare sector in Togo faces a lot of challenges. There is a shortage of staff and resources. There are not enough facilities and the supplies being used are outdated. Togo is working on improving the current situation, but it will need investment at the earliest. We expect the country will need 12 additional hospitals by 2030 to maintain the current healthcare standards.
