Top 5 Power Projects in Africa
Africa’s population will exceed 2.5 billion by 2050. Power is a key issue since less than 50 per cent of the people in sub-Sahara Africa has access to reliable power. At the moment, there are roughly $400 billion of active power projects in Africa.
Currently, an estimated 600 million people do not have access to reliable power in sub-Sahara Africa. African nations are investing $400 billion in new energy projects to improve access to power and provide for the growing population.

El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant
The El Dabaa Nuclear Power plant has a 4.8-gigawatt capacity and located in the Dabaa district in Egypt’s Matrouh governorate. The plant will have four pressurised water reactors, each producing 1.2 gigawatts.
Kusile power station
The Kusile coal-fired power plant is in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province. Massive cost overruns and delays have plagued the project. The plant has six coal-fired units, each with an 800 megawatt capacity for a total of 4.8-gigawatt plant capacity.
Mambilla Hydropower Projects
The Mambilla hydropower project is on the Dongo river in Nigeria and will have an installed capacity of 3.05 gigawatts. This development includes four dams on the Dongo river.
Batoka Gorge Hydroelectric Dam
Batoka Gorge Hydro Electricity Scheme is on the Zambesi river and will have an installed capacity of 2.4 gigawatts. The project is on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, approximately 54km downstream of the Victoria Waterfall.
Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance dam is on the Nile River. The dam has been under construction for several years and, once operational, will be the largest hydroelectric power plant on the African continent. It will have an installed capacity of 6.4 gigawatts.
