$200 million in additional humanitarian aid for the Horn of Africa

The United States has announced over $200 million in additional humanitarian assistance for the Horn of Africa region

In a press release dated 27 April 2022, the United States announced over $200 million in additional humanitarian assistance for the Horn of Africa region. The release states that the aid will help combat severe drought and assist refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) due to conflict.

“This assistance from the American people will enable our international humanitarian partners to meet the humanitarian needs in the region, including the provision of food and nutrition assistance, health services, access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene, and general livelihood support.” Ned Price, Department Spokesperson

According to the UNHCR, 16.8 million people will need urgent assistance in the East and Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes. The same organisation indicates that 69% are internally displaced persons, 30% are refugees, and 1% are asylum seekers.

Immediate, full, safe, and unhindered access for humanitarian organisations and workers is essential to provide timely, need-based assistance to those affected by the drought and the ongoing conflict and save lives.” Ned Price, Department Spokesperson
