Burkina Faso requires 30 hospitals by 2030

21 May 2020

Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa. It has a population of 20.9 million as of 2020. ABiQ predicts the population will increase by 21% and cross 25 million by 2030.

Burkina Faso is the fourth largest gold producing country in Africa, yet it is one of the poorest countries in the world. Like many African countries, its economy depends on mining and agriculture. Gold and cotton account for most of its exports. The GDP was $14 billion or slightly over $700 per capita in 2019.

Power and Water:

Burkina Faso has one of the lowest access to power ratios globally at less than 20%. The government has made it a priority to improve power generation and distribution. With difficulty accessing funding, it is encouraging private sector investment. The country aims to bring down the cost of electricity and increase the access to power rate to 95% by 2025. We expect the country will require 270 megawatts of additional electricity capacity within the next 10 years to maintain the current access to power rate.

The country hasn’t got the funding or required skills to manage or improve the water supply and sanitation services. The country has received funding from the African Development Bank for water projects which will improve the overall situation. To maintain the current water supply standard, ABiQ estimate Burkina Faso will need 320 million cubic meters of potable water per annum over the next decade.

Retail:

The retail sector will see growth as the population increase and the economy stabilize. We expect the country will require an additional 480,000 square meters of retail space to meet the needs of the population.

Healthcare:

Many healthcare facilities were closed due to the recent increase in violence. The Coronavirus outbreak has further impacted access to healthcare services in Burkina Faso. We expect the country will require an additional 30 hospitals within 10 years to maintain the current healthcare system.
