The retail sector is developing in Ivory Coast

10 Jun 2020

Ivory Coast is a West African country with a population of 26.4 million. It is expected to grow by 20% and reach almost 32 million over the next decade.

Agriculture is an important driver of the economy along with exports of cocoa, cashew, and palm oil. Ivory Coast is the largest producer of Cocoa, and one of the top 3 producers of cashews in the world. It had a GDP of $45 billion or almost $1,700 per capita in 2019. The country has been investing in modernizing its agriculture sector which has improved its output.

Power and Water:

The country aims to achieve 100% of electricity access by 2025. The economy has been on a rise and that has resulted in a demand for power generation. Ivory Coast aims to triple its power production by 2030. Investment in infrastructure has taken a priority and has been open to public-private-partnerships (PPPs). We expect the country will need 220 megawatts of electricity generating capacity over the next 10 years to help maintain the current standard access.

The country aims to achieve safe water for all by 2030 and has been investing in infrastructure to improve its water supply network. We predict it will require an additional 350 million cubic metres of potable water per annum by 2030 to meet the demand of the growing population.

Retail:

Ivory Coast has preferred traditional trade over the years, but the trend is changing slowly. International retailers have entered the market and are planning to expand as modern trade develops. The economy has also grown in recent years which has also resulted in a rise in consumer spending. We expect the country will require an additional 600,000 square metres of retail space over the next 10 years.

Healthcare:

Ivory Coast has shown commitment towards providing quality and affordable healthcare to the entire population by investing in infrastructure development. In addition, we believe the country will need 37 additional hospitals to maintain the current healthcare standard.
