Africa’s 11th largest country to grow 28% by 2030

2 Jul 2020

Mauritania is a country in Western Africa. It is the 11th largest country in Africa. ABiQ predicts its population will reach 6.0 million by 2030 from the current 4.1 million. That’s a 28% growth over a period of 10 years.

Subsistence agriculture, oil, and mining are the main contributors to the economy, which is highly sensitive to international prices. Mauritania had a GDP of $6 billion or almost $1,400 per capita. The country has been investing in agriculture and infrastructure to help maintain economic stability and reduce poverty.

Power and Water:

In 2019 around 45% of the population had access to electricity. Mauritania is focusing on generating its power from renewable sources as it’s endowed with substantial solar, wind, and hydro, as well as natural gas reserves. We expect the country will require an additional 50 megawatts of electricity capacity over 10 years to maintain the access rate.

Access to potable water is 68% for Mauritania. Accessing water has been a challenge for a while and the government has undertaken a few projects to improve water distribution. ABiQ predicts the country will need 96 million cubic metres of potable water per annum by 2030 to meet the demands of the growing population.

Retail:

The retail market has been developed well in the country. International retailers have entered the market and planning to expand. We predict there will be a need for 150,000 square metres of additional retail space over the next 10 years as the sector will continue to grow.

Healthcare:

Modern health facilities are scarce in Mauritania. The country is taking measures to improve the current situation and has made it a priority to strengthen the sector. According to ABiQ’s business intelligence tool, Mauritania will require 9 additional hospitals to maintain the existing healthcare standard.
