Can Eswatini achieve Health Coverage for all?

13 May 2020

Eswatini has a population of 1.1 million. It is expected to grow by 6% to 1.2 million by 2030.

Eswatini is the fourth-largest producer of sugar in Africa and the bulk of the country’s exports. Other sectors that contribute to the economy include agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. In 2019, the country had a GDP of $5 billion or slightly over $4,100 per capita.

Power and Water

The country imports most of its electricity from its neighbours South Africa and Mozambique. The power sector will require more investment so that the country can become power independent. ABiQ estimates an additional 5 megawatts of electricity capacity will be required within the next decade.

Eswatini has committed to achieving 100% access to safe and clean water for all by 2030. In order to achieve this goal, the country will need an additional 6 million cubic metres of potable water per annum.

Retail

The growing population will boost the demand for retail. ABiQ predicts Eswatini will need an additional 9,000 square meters of retail space over the next 10 years.

Healthcare

Eswatini aspires to achieve universal health coverage for all of its population. To achieve this, the country needs more investment in healthcare infrastructure as well as hire and train more health workers. It will need one more hospital by 2030 to help achieve this goal.
