Mali’s power sector in need of investment

May 12, 2020 | Mali

More than half of the population has limited or no access to electricity. Mali is taking steps to enable private sector investment.

Mali has a population of slightly over 20 million. Mali has one of the highest fertility rates in the world which results in accelerating population growth. Using our business intelligence tool, we forecast it to grow 23% to reach 25 million within 10 years.

Mali is one of the poorest countries in the world. The economy relies on traditional agriculture, fishing, and mining. The country had a GDP of $18 billion, or slightly over $900 per capita. The government has adopted a National Strategic Framework for improving the economy, which will result in more opportunities for the country.

Power and Water

More than half of the population has limited or no access to electricity. The government is taking steps to enable private sector investment in the power industry. The country is abundant with natural resources which makes it ideal for investment. We believe it will require an additional 180 megawatts of electricity capacity with the next decade to improve access to electricity.

70% of the population has access to water but more efforts and investment is required in the sector.  The growing population and less rainfall pose a challenge to the existing resources. An additional 338 million cubic metres potable water per annum will be required by 2030.

The retail sector is not fully developed in Mali due to the security risk and an unstable economy. This will improve with time and we predict the country will require an additional 510,000 square meters of retail space within 10 years.

Mali aspires to provide basic healthcare to all of its population, especially the infants and pregnant women. The initiative will result in building more hospitals and hiring more healthcare workers. Mali will need 32 more hospitals by 2030 to help the initiative become a success.
