Senegal’s population to hit 30 million in 2030

Apr 27, 2020 | Senegal

Growing at 22%, Senegal's population will reach 20 million by 2030. The fast growth rate will require significant investment to ensure employment opportunities for the young population.

Senegal’s population will grow by 22% over the next 10 years from 16.8 million to 20.4 million, based on forecasts done by ABiQ.

The government has adopted a new model for development as part of the ‘Plan for an Emerging Senegal’ initiative. Senegal’s economy is driven by a mix of sectors including but not limited to agriculture, mining, construction and tourism. It had a GDP of $25 billion, or slightly over $1,400 per capita in 2019.

Power and water

Developing the power sector has been a key objective for Senegal. Over 30% of the population still needs access to electricity. The government is focusing on renewable energy as a source and has recently inaugurated a wind power plant. We believe Senegal will require an additional 140 megawatts of electricity capacity by 2030 to meet its objectives.

The Senegal ministry of water and sanitation has recently signed an agreement with SEUZ Water Technologies for managing and improving the access to potable water for the country. Senegal aims to provide access to clean water for all. Over the next decade, the growing population will require an additional 268 million cubic meters of potable water per annum.

Retail space

An improving economy, consumers with a higher income and a growing population has resulted in a demand for products with a high value. Many International retailers are either entering the market or planning to expand their presence. ABiQ believes there will be an additional demand for 400,000 square meters of retail space by 2030.

Senegal is working on improving its healthcare infrastructure and policies to ensure quality health services for its people. There has been a shortage of healthcare workers, especially in rural areas. Using ABiQ’s forecasting tool, we can predict Senegal will need another 20 hospitals by 2030 just to maintain the current health standards.
