Sudan needs to diversify its economy

12 Jul 2020

Located in North Africa, Sudan has a population of almost 44 million. According to ABiQ’s business intelligence tool, it is expected to grow 26% over 10 years and cross 55 million by 2030.

Oil production helped Sudan’s economy before the separation of South Sudan. The economy has suffered since then. Sudan has tried to diversify the economy and explore mining and agriculture. The country had a GDP of $31 billion or slightly over $715 per capita in 2019.

Power and Water:

Around 60% of Sudan has access to electricity. The access rate has improved over the years but suffered from sanctions imposed and the secession of South Sudan. ABiQ predicts the country will require an additional 440 megawatts of electricity generating capacity by 2030 to sustain the current access rate.

Access to potable water is around 70% in Sudan. All the sectors, especially agriculture, requires more water. A growing population will also put more pressure on the sector. We expect the country will need 840 million cubic metres of potable water per annum over the next decade to improve the current access rate.

The people in Sudan prefer traditional retail over modern retail. The market could have grown more had it not been for the sanctions. We expect the sector to grow more in the coming years with the easing in sanctions. ABiQ predicts the growth of an additional 1.3 million square metres of retail space by 2030 to meet the demand.

The healthcare sector has suffered over the years due to political instability and lack of resources. Investment is required for developing infrastructure and hiring more professionals to support the current healthcare system. We believe Sudan will require around 80 hospitals over the next decade to improve the healthcare sector.
