Top 5 Projects in Algeria

Algeria has more than $69 billion of active projects, of which $56 billion is currently under construction. The government is actively seeking to diversify the economy away from its reliance on hydrocarbons.

Algeria’s population will grow by 15 per cent over the next ten years to cross the 50 million mark by 2031. Rich in natural gas resources and the country’s main export, Algeria is looking for ways to diversify its economy away from its reliance on gas.  

There are currently more than $69 billion of active projects in Algeria, of which $56 billion is currently under construction. The energy, hydrocarbons, industrial and transport sectors are the most active.

In 2019 the government announced the massive $34 billion “Renewable Energy Development and Energy Efficiency Program”, which aims to generate 22 Gigawatt, or 27 per cent of the country’s energy, from mainly solar energy sources. The first 4 Gigawatt Tafouk 1 solar project will be delayed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tebessa phosphate plant

The Tebessa phosphate plant will increase phosphate production by 10 million tonnes per year. At an investment $6 billion, the plant with three feeder mines will be operational by 2022.

Hassi Messaoud Refinery

Developed by Sonatrach, this 100 thousand barrel per day greenfield refinery at Haoud El Hamra in Hassi Messaoud in Algeria will be operational in the first half of 2024.  Amec Foster Wheeler carried out the Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) work whilst a joint venture between Tecnicas Reunidas and Samsung Engineering, is responsible for the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC).

Algiers Metro Line 1 Extensions

Entreprise Metro d’Alger is extending the Metro line 1 by 38 kilometres and adding 24 stations. Cosider Group is the main contractor, and the extension line will enter service at the end of 2023.

Ain Tsila Landfill Gas Collection System

GIS Groupement Isarene is developing a landfill gas collection facility with 30 wells and a 364 million cubic feet per day capacity. The project is executed on a Build, Operate & Transfer (BOT) basis by Petrofac, and commissioning will complete at the end of 2022.

Algiers Tramway Extensions

Entreprise Metro d’Alger is extending the tramway to link Darqana, Harawah and Ain Tayeh. Several delays have troubled the project since work started in 2013.
