Shell announces deep-water discoveries offshore Namibia

Shell has made a significant oil discovery in deep water off the coast of Namibia. Shell’s JV partners Namcor and Qatar Energy are evaluating development options.

On 22 April 2022, Shell announced significant deep-water discoveries offshore Namibia via its website. These discoveries follow the successful drilling of its first exploration well (Graff-1) offshore southern Namibia in February 2022; the same press release has confirmed.

“We’re very encouraged by the early results from the deep-water Graff-1 exploration well, which established a working petroleum system and the presence of light oil. Over the coming months, we’ll need further to evaluate the well results and additional exploration activity to determine the size and recoverable potential of the identified hydrocarbons.” Dennis Zekveld, Shell’s Country Chair in Namibia.

According to the company, this second discovery of hydrocarbons pays zone is located in the “La Rona-1 prospect in the Orange Basin in PEL 0039”. In addition to attracting significant private sector investment to the country, these oil and gas discoveries will generate billions of dollars in tax revenues for the government (Reuters).

We look forward to continued close collaboration with our JV partners – NAMCOR and QatarEnergy – and the Government of Namibia on the next steps.” Marc Gerrits, Shell’s Executive Vice President of Exploration.
