Five regional economic communities in the Eastern and Southern Africa and Indian Ocean regions (EA-SA-IO) will benefit from the Enhancement of Governance and Enabling Environment in the ICT sector (EGEE-ICT) programme.
EGEE-ICT Programme
The EGEE-ICT programme is a four-year programme, funded by the European Union. The EGEE-ICT programme will facilitate the use of e-services in the countries that make up the above-mentioned regions. The EGEE-ICT programme will also develop model policy and regulatory frameworks that enhance cross-border interconnection, competition, trade facilitation, e-commerce, and gender perspectives in regional ICT markets.
Five Selected Regions
According to a COMESA press release, dated 12 May 2022, five regional economic communities in the Eastern and Southern Africa and Indian Ocean regions (EA-SA-IO) will benefit from the EGEE-ICT programme:
“The EGEE-ICT programme is fully aligned with the EU Global Gateway Strategy and it would contribute to the development of the ICT sector in Africa and deepen regional integration,” stated Claudio Bacigalupi, European Union Delegation to Zambia Team Leader for Infrastructure.

The regional economic communities listed in the press release where the initiatives funded by this €8 million grant will be implemented are:
- Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA)
- East African Community (EAC)
- Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD)
- Indian Ocean Commission (IOC)
- Southern African Development Community (SADC)
