To support its booming population, governments are increasingly investing in hospital construction projects in Africa. While many projects are small, there are also many large-scale projects to construct major healthcare facilities across the African continent. In the following article, we will have a look at some of the most significant projects being planned or built.

New Capital Hospital City – Cairo, Egypt

The massive $800 million New Capital Hospital City is part of Egypt’s New Administrative Capital master plan. It will have more than 4,200 beds, a kidney, ophthalmia, diabetes, and liver institute, as well as a new University of Medical Sciences.

The project is developed by the Administrative Capital for Urban Development. The contractor, the Egyptian company Industrial Construction & Engineering Company (SIAC) Holding Construction started work on the project in June 2024. Other involved parties include the Engineering Consultants Group, and the Ahmed Aggour Consulting Engineering Office. Construction is scheduled for completion in early 2028.

This project is one of the largest hospital construction projects in Africa, and the largest in Egypt.

African Medical Centre of Excellence – Abuja, Nigeria

The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) is a $750 million project in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja. It aims to construct a 500-bed hospital as a secondary and tertiary institution with a range of services and specializations. Construction is split into four phases.

The Nigeria Ministry of Health as the developer is supported by Bovell Ross Project Management from South Africa. The architect is Perkins & Will from the United States, Dar Al Handasah is the main consultant. Financing is provided by the African Export-Import Bank and the Africa Finance Corporation. Once completed, the hospital will be operated in partnership with King’s College Hospital, London.

Construction started in late 2022 and is scheduled for completion in late 2025. This is the largest hospital construction project in Africa, South of the Sahara. 

Staoueli CHU hospital – Algiers, Algeria

The Staoueli CHU Hospital is a hospital project currently under construction in Algiers, Algeria. At the cost of $500 million, the Algeria Ministry of Health, Population and Hospital Reform aims to develop a 12-floor, 700-bed hospital and medical research center. The China State Construction Engineering Corporation became the main contractor of the project in 2020.

The project is scheduled for completion in late 2024.

Mohammed VI International University Hospital Expansion – Rabat, Morocco

The Mohammed VI International University Hospital is an existent hospital in Rabat, the capital of Morocco. At the cost of $450 million, the Morocco Ministry of Health and Social Protection is developing a hospital campus with four six-story buildings and a 25-story tower.

It will have more than 550 beds and 20 operating theatres, as well as 15 lecture theatres, 72 teaching rooms, and 2017 rooms for practical (educational) work.

AIA Architects planned the building. The main contractor is Bymaro, a subsidiary of French Bouygues Group.

Construction started in mid-2024 and is expected to conclude in Q3 of 2025.

Tygerberg Hospital Redevelopment – Cape Town, South Africa

Tygerberg Hospital is a tertiary hospital opened in 1976 in Cape Town, South Africa. It is the second-largest hospital in South Africa. The current redevelopment project will see the construction of a new 550-bed regional hospital at the cost of $400 million.

The Western Cape Department of Health is currently looking for interested parties to develop the project as a public-private partnership (PPP). Construction is scheduled to commence in 2026 and completion is targeted for early 2031.
