The Rwandan Community Abroad (RCA) and MTN Rwanda connect 1700 additional households to electricity.

The Rwandan Community Abroad (RCA) and MTN Rwanda recently participated in the Development Bank of Rwanda’s (BRD) #CanaChallenge. The challenge was launched in December 2021, and sponsored the delivery of 1,700 solar home systems to residents in the Gicumbi and Kamonyi areas of Rwanda (BRD, press release, July 06, 2022).

The Cana Challenge Initiative

‘’We are extremely thankful to our partners – MTN Rwanda and the Rwanda Community Abroad – for their generous support to the Cana Challenge Initiative which has enabled us to exceed our initial target and connect an additional 1,700 households in Kamonyi and Gicumbi. So far, we have connected a total of 16,494 households to electricity and our objective is to increase this number as we continue to receive contributions from different sources,’’ said Gloria Tengera, Company Secretary and General Counsel.

The Development Bank of Rwanda is committed to helping the country achieve SDG7, while specifically targeting survivors of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis to help them access reliable and affordable electricity.

Solar home systems for genocide victims

‘’During the same event, BRD took the opportunity to deliver solar homes systems to 1,000 households – who are survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi –, following a commitment made during this year’s 28th commemoration,” outlined The Development Bank of Rwanda press release.
