Seychelles requires 350,000 m³ Potable Water

19 Jul 2020

Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands off the Eastern Coast of Africa. It has a population of 100,000 and will grow by 4% over a period of 10 years according to ABiQ’s business intelligence tool.

Tourism accounts for over 50% of its GDP. The government has been working on diversifying its economy as the tourism sector is vulnerable to factors beyond their control such as climate change, natural disasters, and political unrest in countries where tourists arrive from. It had a GDP of $2 billion or slightly over $17,000 per capita.

Power and Water

Access to electricity is 100% but almost 97% of the electricity is generated through fossil fuels. The government is aiming to generate 15% of its electricity through renewable energy sources by 2030. Seychelles is working towards the goal and is looking to attract foreign investment to develop the required infrastructure. We expect Seychelles will need 1 megawatt of additional electricity capacity by 2030 to maintain the current access rate.

Access to groundwater resources is limited. Seychelles has to manage the existing resources and find more water. Climate changes are another concern for the archipelago. Using ABiQ’s forecasting tool, we are able to predict that it will require an additional 350,000 cubic metres of potable water per annum over the next 10 years.

Seychelles is an attractive market for international retail chains. More players plan to enter the market. We predict the country will require 500 square metres of additional retail space by 2030 to meet the demand.

Seychelles has focused and invested in its healthcare sector and as a result, the country has adequate healthcare facilities for its residents. The country has enough hospitals and will not require any additional infrastructure over the next 10 years.
