Road construction companies and infrastructure development in Nigeria
In Nigeria infrastructure development is experiencing rapid growth, with numerous road construction companies at the forefront of this transformation. Among the leading players in this sector, three road construction companies in Nigeria stand out for the scale and scope of their project involvement.
CCECC Nigeria– Nigeria’s largest contractor
CCECC Nigeria is the largest of all road construction companies in Nigeria. It is a subsidiary of Chinese contractor “China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC)”. CCECC Nigeria has been awarded the largest number of ongoing and upcoming road construction projects in Nigeria. The largest project it is engaged in is Lagos’ Fourth Mainland bridge, which CCECC is working on with its joint venture partner CRCCIG.
Julius Berger Nigeria – the iconic white “B” on a blue background
Julius Berger Nigeria is the largest domestic player among road construction companies in Nigeria, and often marks completed construction projects with a small, blue and white “B” monument. In 2023, the publicly listed company reported a revenue of almost $700 million. Activities include road construction, building construction, industrial construction, and various other businesses. As of 2024, the Lagos Ibadan Expressway Rehabilitation is Julius Berger’s largest ongoing road construction project.
Dantata and Sawoe Construction Company – Infrastructure development in Northern Nigeria
Dantata and Sawoe Construction Company is the largest domestic, non-listed road construction company in Nigeria. Having been established in 1976, D&S is looking back at a relatively long history of constructing mostly infrastructure projects of various types in Northern Nigeria. The company’s largest ongoing project is the $400 million Abuja – Kaduna – Zaria – Kano road.
Opportunities for local and global suppliers
These three companies, along with various other sizable local players, may well benefit from the large infrastructure deficit that Nigeria is facing. To global suppliers, Nigeria’s leading contractors represent important potential partners to realise the huge opportunities in one of Africa’s largest economies.
