Nairobi Malaba Railway
Phase 2, Section B (Naivasha to Kisumu) of the Nairobi Malaba Railway project is the largest Kenya infrastructure project currently under construction. The impressive $3.7 billion project covers a 262 km rail line connecting Naivasha, among other destinations, with the New Kisumu Port. Initially announced in 2011, construction is currently scheduled to conclude in late 2028. However, the project is currently facing delays due to funding issues.
Nairobi Mombasa Expressway
The 482 km Nairobi Mombasa Expressway project is developed as a public-private partnership between Everstrong Capital, a US-based company, and the Kenya National Highways Authority. The $3.6 billion Kenya infrastructure project is currently undergoing a feasibility study. After initial delays, construction start is scheduled for July 2026, and project completion for mid-2030.
Lamu Port
Kenya Ports Authority awarded the $3 billion Lamu Port project to contractor China Communications Construction Corporation in 2014. Supported with financing from the African Development Bank (Afdb), the project is expected to be completed in 2025.
Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Upgrade
In July 2024, Adani Airport Holdings expressed interest to invest in the upgrade of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The $1.9 billion project is meanwhile undergoing an early feasibility study. If successful, the project will entail new structures such as a new passenger terminal, runway, and taxiway, as well as upgrades to existing facilities. Construction is scheduled to start in late 2025.
Mombasa Gate Bridge
Kenya National Highways Authority is planning to build a 1.4 km suspended bridge to connect Mombasa Island with the city’s south coast. This key Kenya infrastructure project is receiving funding support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, and is currently in the design stage. Construction is scheduled to start in mid-2025, and will conclude in 2029.
