Project showcase: Driving innovation in Kenya – Konza City

3 May 2024

Kenya presents diverse economic opportunities fuelled by its strategic location, natural resources, and growing consumer market. Key sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and technology offer avenues for investment and growth, while government initiatives aim to enhance infrastructure and attract foreign investment. With a youthful population and a dynamic entrepreneurial spirit, the country seeks to continue its recent strong economic track record.

The Konza Techno City, also referred to as Konza Smart City, is an embodiment of this ambition. Located in Machakos County, this $14.5 billion mixed-use development is one of the largest construction projects in Africa. It covers 5,000 acres of land, including science parks, a data centre, commercial office spaces, hotels, clinics, educational institutions, and other structures. Since construction started in 2017, significant progress has been made in phase one, which focuses on infrastructure. Due to the project’s impressive size, construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2037.

Currently, several key stakeholders are involved. The Konza Technopolis Development Authority (a public body established in 2012), is developing the project. International participation in the project is significant, with the main contractor being the Italian company Gruppo ICM, as well as involvement from SHoP Architects and Tetra Tech consultants from the United States.
